In canicross, the choice of equipment for both the dog and the human is important for safe practice and maximum comfort. Use your usual running gear
Canicross is primarily about running. Our athletes Inlandsis in canicross are also excellent runners or trail runners without their dog! We advise you to use your Usual running equipment for the running component of canicross.
If your dog is powerful and fast, its pulling strength will quickly make you run at high speed. Some runners then appreciate compression garments for the calves, thighs, and arms, but it's not mandatory.
How to choose a suitable harness for canicross
The specificity of canicross compared to running lies in the traction transmitted by the dog. It is the harness who will transmit this pulling force to you, and you must therefore pay attention to the following points to run effectively and comfortably:
- Freedom of movement : The canicross harness should not hinder your running. Therefore, pay attention to its size and ergonomics. Also, be mindful of any chafing that may be caused by a poorly placed seam or buckle.
- Distribution of traction : the pulling force of your dog should be distributed over a sufficient and comfortable surface. The strap that serves this purpose should therefore be wide enough.
- Low center of gravity : here is a specific feature of the canicross harness compared to the belt, which is more recommended for cani-hiking. For more comfort and control, the pulling force is lowered to the level of the hips and buttocks rather than the back.
Finally, know that canicross harnesses are suitable for skijoring.
What to choose between a canicross belt and a harness ?
If you practice mainly canicross and skijoring, we strongly advise you to choose a canicross harness instead of a belt. The use may seem less intuitive at first, but you will quickly feel the benefits in your sports practice.
Use a belt may be sufficient in canicross if your dog pulls a little. It is also easier to adjust and put on. The same applies for occasional practice and mixed canicross / cani-hiking : the harness will be more ergonomic in our opinion, however, a cani-hiking belt may suffice.
At Inlandsis, We currently offer a highly efficient and comfortable harness for canicross and skijoring, the Aircross harness, as well as a belt more oriented towards cani-hiking and occasional canicross, the Trekker belt. In 2024, we will launch a harness that will offer more versatility between canicross and cani-hiking. Stay tuned !
