La Grande Odyssée, THE reference sled dog race in Europe
Ambitious from its first edition in January 2005, La Grande Odyssée quickly stood out as a major sled dog race in Europe. The technical nature of the trails and the beauty of the Alpine landscapes delight both mushers and the public.
A sporting challenge for mushers and their dogs
In terms of sports, the challenge is significant for the more than 65 mushers participating with their dogs. Over 13 days of racing, they must cover more than 400 km and 12,000 m of positive elevation gain through the French Alps with their team. Initially a long-distance format, La Grande Odyssée has adapted to the evolution of mushing. In recent editions, it has shifted to mid-distance with stages of about thirty kilometers.
The adventure continues with a high-altitude bivouac at the Mont Cenis polar base. The technicality of the trails allows mushers and dogs to showcase their physical and driving skills. The public can also get close to the mushers during the mass-start, traditionally held in Bessans.
Trophies are also organized to allow mushers who wish to participate only in certain stages. L'Odyssée des Enfants also allows 20 young people to follow in the footsteps of their idols with a team of 3 or 4 dogs.
A popular event for sled dog lovers
Each year, La Grande Odyssée is THE event for sled dog enthusiasts and a large audience gathered along the trails. The media are also present, with about a hundred journalists on-site, much to the delight of millions of viewers and readers.
The health of the dogs above all
Animal welfare has always been a priority in harnessed canine sports. La Grande Odyssée is no exception and invests significant resources to ensure, alongside the mushers, the well-being of the dogs involved. The veterinary team is at the cutting edge and has high-level equipment to ensure the daily monitoring of the dogs.
In parallel, several scientific studies are conducted to advance knowledge about these top-level athletes.

The technicality and respect for dogs are values shared by La Grande Odyssée and Inlandsis. Naturally, we have been the main canine equipment partner of La Grande Odyssée since our creation.
The mushers of the Inlandsis team stand out each year with their incredible performances (numerous victories and podiums) and for the care they provide daily to their dogs. Jean Combazard, Jocelyne Combazard, Remy Coste, Aurélie Delattre, Thibaut Branquart, and Aurélien Froideur proudly represent Inlandsis with ethics, and we thank them!
We are also present on-site, alongside the mushers and the public, with activities, donations, and gifts according to the opportunities of each edition.
