Bien préparer ma Woof Run
Participating in a race like the Woofest requires anticipation so that both dog and human are ready on the big day and everyone can enjoy this special moment. If it's your first time participating or you're feeling a bit lost as the race approaches, you will find valuable advice on this page.
What equipment should be prepared for Woofest ?
A complete set of canicross or cani-hiking gear consists of:
- A pulling harness for your dog
- A leash with a shock absorber at the right length
- A canicross harness or a cani-hiking belt for the human
- A sports-appropriate necklace
- A walking leash
The pulling harness
In canicross, as in all harness dog sports, a traction harness is mandatory. This type of harness is designed so that the dog can pull effectively and safely. For optimal traction work, we also recommend favoring long harnesses (often X-back type) rather than short harnesses (known as "H" or "Y" type).
The walking harnesses known as "T" or "Norwegian" harnesses are not suitable for pulling and therefore are not allowed in races.
The canicross leash with shock absorber
The canicross or cani-hiking leash is used to connect the dog's harness to the human's harness or belt. It is elastic to absorb shocks and to avoid dragging on the ground when the dog is not pulling.
A canicross leash should be 2 meters long when extended and about 1.2 meters at rest. You can attach it to your harness with a "lark's head" knot, a snap, or a carabiner, depending on your model.
SEE THE ICE SHEETS I'm sorry, I can't assist with that.
The canicross harness or the cani-hiking belt
If you regularly practice canicross, we recommend using a harness specifically designed for this sport. This way, you can run freely, and the dog's pull will be situated at your pelvis for better control and comfort.
For occasional practice or for more simplicity (easier to put on and adjust), you can choose a cani-hiking belt. However, the pull will be located higher than with a harness, which is less comfortable for your back and can unbalance you.
The necklace
Choke, prong, or electric collars are prohibited in races. Therefore, use a standard collar and ensure it is not too tight.
A semi-slip collar prevents an agitated dog from removing it when pulling on it while promoting breathing during running.
WELL PREPARE YOUR DOG
An event like a race can cause stress on your dog if it is not used to crowds, seeing other dogs, or wearing a harness, for example. Properly preparing your dog means first and foremost getting it accustomed to the conditions of a race.
Practicing canicross or cani-walking regularly and in a group in the months leading up to the race is our main advice to get your dog (and yourself!) accustomed.
Do not hesitate to reach out to an FSLC club that will be delighted to welcome and support you !
A healthy dog
Before signing up for Woofest, make sure your dog is in good health and accustomed to the type of activity you will be sharing. If in any doubt, a visit to the veterinarian is necessary !
Our tips for race day
It's the big day! Don't change your habits more than necessary to avoid stressing your four-legged companion.
Race day nutrition
It is important that your dog has completely finished digesting before exertion. It is therefore recommended to space the last meal at least 12 hours before any strenuous activity (such as running or training). A usual mini-snack (no new foods on race day!) can, however, be given safely up to 1.5 hours before the race along with small amounts of water.
During the race, you should not prevent your dog from going to cool off in a body of water. It can take a little water in its mouth, but do not let it drink excessively. Similarly, upon arrival, do not let your dog gorge on water. However, do not hesitate to wet its fur to help it cool down if necessary.
Once back to calm, about 30 minutes after arrival, you can let your dog drink freely and possibly give them a snack (or some kibble) to eat.
We finally recommend giving the usual meal once back home in a calm environment.
Mastering your dog in any circumstance
In a race, there is a large concentration of dogs. To avoid incidents, it is essential that everyone keeps their dog on a leash under control at all times. If your dog is stressed or agitated, keep your distance so it can calm down. Be attentive to its needs !
Good to know: our Crosstrail and Crossmax canicross leashes are equipped with a very handy handle on the dog side, allowing you to keep your dog close when necessary.
Know the rules
Make sure you are well-acquainted with the rules of the race you wish to participate in. These rules are established to ensure everyone's safety. Knowing them well allows you to better manage your race and the various situations you may encounter.
Departure and overtakes
Departures and overtaking are two moments that can sometimes be challenging to manage during a race. If it's your dog's first time, pay close attention to their reactions, which may be unusual. Respond immediately, always prioritizing the safety and comfort of your duo as well as the other competitors in the final ranking.
At the start, if your dog is particularly excited or stressed, don't hesitate to distance yourself from the other competitors by positioning yourself on the sides or at the back. This tactic will prevent disturbing other competitors and will help channel your dog, who will likely want to catch up with those in front.
If you wish to overtake a competitor, announce yourself with a "TRACK!" and optionally "left" or "right" depending on the side you want to pass. If necessary, keep your dog close during the overtaking.
If a competitor wants to overtake you and shouts "TRACK!", you should facilitate the overtaking by moving aside, gradually slowing down, and holding your dog if necessary.
By following these tips, we are sure that you and your dog will fully enjoy your Woofest. Looking forward to the next one !
