Comment choisir des bottines pour son chien ?
When walking, training, or racing, some surfaces can pose a risk of wear or injury to your dogs' paws and pads. That's why Inlandsis developed 3 models of dog boots to protect their paws whenever necessary.
For practicing sports with your dog (harnessing, canicross, bikejoring, ... like on a walk, dog booties (also known as boots, slippers, or even dog shoes) provide essential protection for dogs' paws and pads. Indeed, in winter, snow can be abrasive to the paws and painful clumps can form between the pads. On land, a rocky surface poses a risk of cuts for your dog. Concrete, stabilized surfaces, and paved roads are abrasive and can become very hot in the sun.
Choosing the right booties for your dogs
There are different solutions to protect your dog's paws and pads. While there are actual boots or shoes for dogs, the soft boot, inseparable from mushing in the middle of winter and dog sledding sports in general, remains the most used. However, you need to choose a model that is suitable for the type of ground on which you practice and the right size.
At Inlandsis, we offer 3 models of boots providing protection and comfort for all surfaces and types of use: the Snowmax, the Fast'n Light 1000, and the Armor boot.
The range of dog boots Inlandsis : Armor, Fast'n Light, Snowmax
Three models of ankle boots Inlandsis for all situations:
Snowmax Boot
Designed for:
- Fresh snow or soft snow
- Groomed trails
- Skijoring
- Sprint sled, mid or long distance
The boot Inlandsis Snowmax is designed for training and racing on snow in skijoring and sled sprint, mid, or long distance. It was specifically designed for use on snow, preferably on groomed trails or fresh/soft snow. Thinner and more flexible than our Fast'n Light bootie, it offers maximum freedom of movement for the dog.
For off-piste and/or non-snow use, we recommend boots instead. Inlandsis Fast'n Light or Inlandsis Armor.
- Very flexible fabric for a natural stride and good grip, while maintaining good resistance to abrasion and perforation.
- They stay perfectly in place without obstructing blood circulation thanks to the adjustable stretchy Velcro fastening.
- The color of the Velcro is different for each size for quick identification.
Fast'n Light™ Boot
Designed for:
- Earth, icy snow
- Stony paths
- Moderately aggressive terrain
- Harnessing and dynamic activity
The Fast'n Light™ dog boot is ideal for sledding and any dynamic activity on moderately aggressive terrain for the dog's pads: dirt, icy snow, rocky paths, etc.
Designed in 1000 denier Cordura, the Fast'n Light 1000™ bootie is flexible and lightweight to not hinder the dog, and it has a very satisfactory score in terms of resistance (product durability varies depending on usage: size of the dog, duration of the outing, type of terrain, etc.).
- 1000 denier Cordura™ fabric is both flexible and durable.
- Elastic Velcro fastening Velstretch™.
- The color of the velcro varies depending on the sizes to allow for easy identification of the product size.
Armor Boot
Designed for:
- Aggressive terrains
- Enhanced protection
- Great longevity
- Harnessing and dynamic activity
Multi-activity dog boots, flexible and durable.
Ankle boots Inlandsis Armor (patent pending) are based on our exclusive, innovative, extremely durable fabric, which gives these boots a lifespan 6 to 8 times longer than traditional boots made from Cordura 1000, with a slightly greater thickness.
Ideal for harnessing and dynamic activities with your pet on rough terrain: dirt, icy snow, rocky paths, stabilized surfaces, etc.
- Cordura 1000 fabric is both flexible and extremely durable.
- Hold perfectly in place without hindering the dog's blood circulation thanks to the adjustable velcro fastening.
- Water-repellent, they protect against water splashes but not heavy downpours.
- The color of the Velcro is different for each size for quick identification.
Note: The more dynamic the activity, the tighter the Velcro should be fastened. For very dynamic activities (such as pulling or free running), do not hesitate to fasten them very tightly and remember to remove the booties as soon as the activity is over. These booties should be considered consumable. Their lifespan may vary depending on the dog's size, the activity, and the terrain. We recommend trimming your dog's nails to optimize their lifespan.
Choosing the right boot size for your dog
Here is the boot size chart Inlandsis, valid for our 3 models:
Caution! The size of the feet is not necessarily correlated with the size of the dog. The weights given above are purely indicative.
If your dog's paw is between two sizes, you can choose the larger boot size.
How to measure the width of a dog's paw ?
-
- Make the dog stand on a flat surface.
- Place a piece of paper underneath the foot to be measured (e.g., right front foot).
- Lift the opposite paw (e.g., front left foot) so that its weight rests on the measured foot.
- Draw 2 small marks on each side of the widest part of the foot.
- Measure and compare with the size chart.
- Repeat the process for the hind feet, they are often smaller !
- If your dog's paw width falls between two boot sizes, you can choose the larger size.
For example, we measured Elva's paw width at 6.5 cm for the front paws and 5.5 cm for the back paws. Therefore, she needs size L boots for the front and size M for the back.
How to maintain your dog boots ?
For greater longevity and for the comfort of your dog, wash the booties regularly. This is especially recommended for our Armor booties, given their primary use on land and their superior lifespan.
All the ankle boots Inlandsis are machine washable on a short cycle, cold or at 30°C.
Consider rinsing the boots with a hose before putting them in the washing machine if they are particularly dirty (mud). We also recommend placing the boots in a laundry bag to protect the velcro and other items being washed at the same time.
How to put booties on your dog ?
- Make sure your dog's paw is clean before putting on the bootie, and if necessary, remove snow, dirt, or stones with your hand or using the bootie.
- Put on the boot with the non-velcro part facing backward for the front paws and forward for the back paws. (Watch the video, you'll understand.)
- Fold the bootie around the paw.
- Wrap the Velcro around the paw and tighten it enough so that the boot does not come off during the exercise.
