How to choose your canicross leash?
The equipment used in canicross, in addition to your usual running gear, consists of:
- a harness or canicross belt for the owner
- a traction harness for your dog
- a canicross leash to attach your dog
Find our tips for choosing your canicross equipment in our canicross guide.
Canicross: What is the purpose of the leash?
In canicross, as in cani-hiking, the leash is used as a pull line. Attached to your dog's traction harness and your harness, it connects you to your dog(s). The leash allows you to benefit from your dog's traction when it runs or to hold it against you if necessary.
How long should a canicross leash be?
-
2m when extended
-
1.10m to 1.35m when at rest
Unlike a walking leash, a canicross leash always includes an elastic part that mainly serves as a shock absorber. To comply with the standards of various federations, your canicross leash must be 2m long when under tension. All our canicross leashes are this length. It is ideal for controlling your dog while giving it the necessary freedom to run.
The elastic part of the leash acts as a shock absorber and prevents it from dragging on the ground when the dog is not pulling. The hardness of the elastic should be adapted to your dog's weight, which is why Inlandsis offers a "small dogs" version of its Crosser 2 model for dogs under 15kg.

Other options on a canicross leash
The handle on the dog's side is very useful for holding your dog close to you. It is available on the Inlandsis Crosstrail and Crossmax models.
The quality of the snap on the dog's side is important. Bronze snaps used on high-end leashes are more durable and do not rust.
If you practice canicross with two dogs, use a double leash (Inlandsis Twincross). The Twincross+ model, equipped with a swivel carabiner Stronglight, allows easy attachment of the leash to the harness and limits the tangling of leashes.
The shock absorber attachment method using Bartack stitching allows for better integration, weight savings, and improved aesthetics compared to traditional knots. This method is used on Crosstrail, Crossmax, Twincross, and Twincross+ leashes.
